The intent of the authors is to discuss digital transformation, a term with as many definitions as people who use it. Newman and Blanchard use the context of real business impact — which I agree is a good place to start — to frame the conversation. Particularly, replacing the Dot Com and post-Dot Com “disruptive startup” obsession (with valuations some part value but many parts speculation about future impact) with a business model that's more grounded in reality but incorporates the strengths of new era digital organizations.The book covers the key aspects of how digital transformation can help a business stay competitive amongst accelerated innovation and global competition. And the focus is not on creating a new business or completing overhauling strategic objectives, but on incorporating the components of digital tools and strategies in conjunction with your existing business goals. Simply put, you don’t have to stop what you’re doing, just incorporate what they recommend ALONG with what you are already planning.
It took me a while to get a feel for their style — their flow had me struggling a bit in the beginning. However, stick with it, as they do a great job bringing it all together by the end. And definitely a book you will want to read through more than once.
I recommend this book for business owners/leaders who are concerned with staying competitive, relevant and even growing their business.

Daniel Newman first got my attention with the book he co-wrote with Hessie Jones, “Evolve Marketing As We Know It Is Doomed”. “Evolve” confirmed what many thought leaders had been saying for the past decade Traditional systems were losing their effectiveness relative to the new buyer journey. Individuals on the cutting edge of these changes were already adapting their processes, mainly at the entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial levels. Even so, acceptance and adoption up and down the corporate hierarchy remains slow to non-existent across several industries.
In “Building Dragons Digital Transformation in the Experience Economy”, Daniel Newman and Olivier Blanchard not only expose why this is happening, but more importantly how to fix it. Creating lasting change requires the diligence and courage of every member of an organization. Everyone must be committed to achieving results. In the words of the authors, “Digital transformation and experience design need to become entrenched in your culture, rather than being a checkbox in your five-year business plan.” If we’re being honest, is a five-year business plan even feasible anymore? Mine changes every month.
It’s a common theme that is repeated over-and-over on social media “WE MUST CHANGE. WE MUST ADAPT!” Many of us get that, right? So why aren’t more of us DOING it, no matter what our role in the organization? Chapter 3 “Tying Digital Transformation to Real World Objectives” provides the answer. Prior to reading that content, I had been unable to wrap my head around how to correlate new market success measurements to traditional success paradigms. This is the TRUE challenge for anyone working to influence their peers, co-workers, superiors, and even the C-Suite, isn’t it? New market (relationship/experience/retention) measurements don’t correlate to traditional (production/market share) measurements. Not sure about you, but this dilemma had puzzled me for the last decade. Finally, Daniel and Olivier put the pieces together in a way that created a crystal-clear vision.
Disclosure I interact with Daniel online, but we don’t work together. I’ve never met him or Olivier Blanchard in person. To date, I’ve never paid them to speak or consult, and neither paid me for this review. With that said, I believe this book to be priceless, as is every insight Daniel has ever offered.

I admit it. When I first bought this book I didn't know a whole lot about the Internet of Things, at least in terms of how it could have ramifications for businesses. I work in the B2B sector primarily, so I was finding it especially difficult to figure out how a B2B manufacturer could make use of the IoT.
You know how sometimes you learn a new word and then you see and hear it everywhere? Well, that's what this book did for me. As I read I began to see, "Oh, OK. That's where the intersection is." Increasingly I have seen articles in the B2B trade publications I read expounding upon the views and ideas I first learned about in this book.
Although this book served as an introduction for me, it is not written in such a way that it makes you feel either dumb because you don't understand anything or like you are being talked down to. The tonality and examples are perfect for what is being discussed.
If you are hearing a lot about the IoT and virtual reality but aren't sure if or how it intersects with your business or industry, this book is a must read.
