I really enjoyed this book from beginning to end and I liked how the author introduced air plains into the war for Independence. It's intersting to see how things would've changed if certain events in this story took place and how farther we would be with aviation tech. Bascily I recommend it to anyone who loves a good Alternate History book and a good war book. It would be intersting if this book was made into a film or series.Product details

Three If By Air is an excellent read. The gliders (carefully detailed and thought out using 18th century technology) bring the reader into a fantastical and new historical period. I did find myself wanting to read more about Nathaniel and Constance's story rather than the air battles; nevertheless, I enjoyed the book very much. It's a great debut novel by Patrick!
Three If By Air is a historical fantasy, or alternate history novel by Patrick Koepke set during the American Revolution. I often hear alternate history novels described as (time period) except with (awesome thing here. Dragons, guns, tanks, whatever). Three If By Air is the American Revolution except with planes. Or gliders, rather.
The book goes from the Boston Massacre all the way through to the end of the war, following Bostonian Nathaniel Hewitt. We get to watch him go from a fresh enlistee to a seasoned flier in the Continental Air Force.
The way that the gliders are treated is very cool. The air battles were awesome to read about. I am not a flying buff, so some of the descriptions about how wings work and how different hulls differ from each other were lost on me and I skimmed most of them, but the fast paced action of aerial battles definitely had me turning the pages.
Nathaniel, our protagonist, is described with detail and skill. I felt all of his highs and lows with him. All of his triumphs and his defeats. If he sometimes comes off as larger than life due to his adventures, his humble attitude brings us back to the realities of war. He is our link to this strange new history.
On the other hand, most other characters suffer. They're a part of the background of Nathaniel's story. Even his wife seems to fade into the action, with all her actions only facilitating Nathaniel's. A lot of interesting people were brought into the story and if I can recall their names, I can't really recall who they are.
Which is how I come to my pet peeve. I have a pet peeve about books where I don't like to learn the names of people who don't have a lot to do with the story. Because this is an alternate history book and of course there has to be some shout outs to the historical figures of the time, I give it a bit of a pass. But if you're anything like me in this, you'll find yourself frowning with frustration when people come into the story, are introduced, and immediately disappear, leaving you wondering why this character was given a viewpoint section in the book at all.
All in all this is a very good debut novel. It's fast paced and action packed and will be appreciated by fans of aerial combat and fans of American History.
Three good stories in one book! Revolutionary war, air battles and a good love story. An excellent first novel at a no risk price.
